Several Halcyon products evolved out of necessity: the performance of available manufactured gear was not acceptable under rigorous mission critical situations. The Scout is just such a product. The Scout is machined out of a solid rod of delrin for strength and fitted with a proper voltage bulb to reduce the risk of failure. Nearly all widely available reserve lights overdrive the bulb to create a brighter beam. While overdriving the bulb is effective for short term use, it increases the stress on the filament, resulting in a greater frequency of bulb failure. The Scout has a machined attachment point at the rear of the light and is free from all the plastic clips and other assorted snags typically present on mass manufactured lights.

Reserve or back-up lights are key components of the DIR gear configuration. These lights must be reliable, streamlined and conveniently stowed along the MC's harness straps. Following a primary light failure in an overhead environment, the diver must switch to the reserve light and initiate an exit. The time spent using the reserve light should not be much greater than half of the diver’s bottom time; however, a reserve light should be able to provide more time in the event of a delayed exit. Reserve lights that are capable of burning for the length of a diver’s total bottom time are sufficient.

Halcyon Helios Lighting Systems

Halcyon Helios NiMH Lighting Systems Nickel-Metal Hydride (NiMH) battery technology emerged nearly thirty years ago from research on the storage of hydrogen for use as an alternative energy source. Underwater, you can stow it out of the way in your BC pocket for when you go over the wall or peer deep under a ledge. As a back-up, the SL4 provides plenty of illumination to finish your dive. The eLED® circuitry provides relatively constant brightness throughout most of the life of the batteries. As the batteries are nearly depleted the brightness of the LED falls sharply, but does not go out as happens with classical filament lamps. This brightness will persist for several days. Valuable for emergency situations.

The SL4 eLED® operates more efficiently and produces more light when when it is cool. Underwater, the SL4 eLED® burns brighter for almost half of the battery life, due to the unique way that heat is conducted away from the LED. Unlike the standard glass envelope lamps used since Edison, the LED will not break when Sunlight C4 eLED™

dropped. The life expectancy is well over 5000 hours. Attaching Light Cannon 100 to Camera Housings:

For consistant lighting, many underwater videographers attach the Light Cannon 100 to their camera housings using a ball-joint arm system. Although we do not manufacture arms, we have found the system manufactured by ULTRALIGHT Control Systems to be a good choice. Scubapro Lights

This new pocket-sized light from SCUBAPRO is just under 5 inches long and weighs under a third of a pound. Crafted from anodized aluminum the NOVA light gives out a 30 lumen beam from an LED bulb running on 3 AAA Alkaline batteries with an expected burn time of 6-8 hours and a 100,000 hour bulb life.
