Fins

Halcyon SpringheelsUnlike swimmers, snorkelers and scuba divers do not use their arms for propulsion.  Fins provide 100% forward propulsion.

Scuba fins (open heel) are not built for speed - they are designed to propel the scuba diver (with gear, cylinder, and weights) effortlessly at a steady rate to cover great distances with low energy output.

Snorkeling fins (full foot fins) are very comfortable for snorkeling, but is not suitable for scuba diving.  Snorkeling fins are designed to propel a snorkeler (a person without scuba equipment or cylinders) on the surface and sometimes underwater for a quick visit.  They simply are not strong enough to provide the necessary propulsion that scuba divers need!

Quality fins are designed for different kicking techniques - the flutter kick, scissor kick and dolphin kick - to vary muscle use.

The best fins should have:

Adjustable fin straps.  This will provide the diver a snug, comfortable fit.

Locking devices.  The locking devices will keep the fin strap in place (not slipping through the buckle).

Comfortable foot pocket.  A foot pocket that is too big could cause blisters and chafing.  A foot pocket that is too small could cause cramps.

Positive or Negatively Buoyant.  It is personal preference whether a diver has positive (floating) or negative (sinking) fins.  It's a good idea to know in case you lose a fin or drop it overboard!

Helpful hints.  It is a good idea to carry extra fin straps and buckles with you.  In case you break a fin strap or a buckle, you will still be able to dive!

Halcyon Spring Heel

DIR approved

Spring Heels fulfill a common desire for a fin straps that is flexible, yet remains secure and resistant to breaking. By eliminating all the failures common to convoluted plastic connections, divers are freed from the risk and hassle of lost fins and broken straps. Designed to fit Jetfin-style rubber fins and most buckle systems on other fins.
  • Automatically adjust to the diver's feet
  • Compensates for depth and compression of boot material
  • Unbreakable strap provides an amazing degree of comfort and peace of mind
  • Stainless steel main spring and safety cable
  • Available in three sizes: medium (8" spring), large (10" spring) and extra-large (12" spring)
