Pre-Requisites

  1. Minimum age of 16
  2. You must have a GUE student application packet on file, which includes medical information, release forms, and dive history.
Note: These forms are sequential (you can't jump around) and you should NOT use your browser's back button or it will erase your information. If you want to see what information is required before you start, you can download a pdf of all the forms (note that it is about 0.5Mb) It is suggested that you print this out ahead of time so you can get the information because online, once you start filling this out, you have to go in sequence and complete the whole thing.  I would also suggest printing out each page after you fill it out and prior to submitting each page.
  3. Open water certification
  4. GUE participants must be non-smokers
  5. All participants must be able to swim at least 200 yards
  6. All participants must be able to swim a distance of at least 40' (15m) on a breath hold
  7. The use of prescription drugs must be authorized prior to the onset of diver training by a physician and approved by a GUE representative

Equipment Requirements

It is basically required that you have a long (5' or more single tank and 7’ for doubles) hose on your primary regulator and have your backup regulator on a bungee/shock cord necklace. You can buy this or we might be able to arrange for one.

For the BC, it is strongly recommended that you use a back-plate and wings configuration. If you do not have this configuration, it is likely that we can provide either a loaner or rental to you. This configuration is "one size fits all", so there shouldn't be any sizing issues.

It is recommended that you use a non-split-fin for your fins. Jet fins are recommended, but are not necessary.

It is recommended that you have a simple high pressure gauge on a 24-26" hose  which can be clipped off to a hip d-ring. Console gauges and air-integrated computers are discouraged (for reasons you will learn in the class) but are not "forbidden". The computer/depth-gauge should be mounted on the wrist, as well as the compass. Again this is recommended but not required.

For more information on equipment configuration, you may find it useful to visit GUE's equipment pages.

Again, if you need some equipment, it's possible we can arrange a rental/loaner for you. Please inform us of any equipment issues when you contact us about the class

Class Limits

  1. All dives are to maintain a working PO2 of no greater than 1.4
  2. No dives are to exceed an equivalent narcotic depth of 60' (18m)
  3. Instructor to student ratio maximum 6:1 in open water, adjusting downward for environmental conditions

Other FAQ

May I take the class in doubles? Yes,  the class can be taken with either double or single tanks.  If you plan to proceed to Cave 1 or Tech 1 in the near future it might be a good idea to use doubles, but it is not required.  Also, if you have never dove double tanks it is probably better to take class in a single tank.

How many tanks should I bring to the open-water portion of the class? If you are diving doubles one full set is all you will need.  If you are diving a single tank (AL80), plan on bringing 2 cylinders. If you are diving a larger size single tank you might be OK with one.  But we will be doing the open water portion at Lake Pleasant and the there are no air fills at the lake.

Class size is limited to 6 participants.  Sign up today!  Call (602) 995-5926 or (602) 253-6622 for more information!
